Water Safety on the Trail: What Dog Parents Need to Know
There’s nothing quite like hitting the trails with your best furry friend. Whether you're exploring local parks or trekking through the woods, hiking is an awesome way to bond, get exercise, and enjoy nature together.
But when it comes to water on the trail—streams, ponds, puddles, and lakes—things can get risky, fast. At J-B Pet Supplies, we’re here to keep your adventures fun and safe with a few important tips on water safety, leash etiquette, and post-hike cleanup.
That peaceful-looking pond or puddle might seem like the perfect place for your pup to cool off, but beware—still or slow-moving water can be a breeding ground for trouble.
Here’s what can be lurking beneath the surface:
🦠 Giardia & Leptospirosis – These harmful parasites and bacteria can be found in standing water contaminated by wildlife urine or feces. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other serious symptoms in dogs—and some are even transmissible to humans.
☠️ Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) – Often found in warm, stagnant ponds or lakes, these harmful algal blooms can be deadly if ingested, even in small amounts. If you see water that’s murky, foamy, or has a green scum—keep your dog far away.
🪵 Hidden Hazards – Debris, sharp sticks, broken glass, or fishing line could injure your dog if they dive in. Even a shallow pond could have hazards just beneath the surface.
If the water is clear, flowing (like a stream), cool, and free of visible algae or debris, it’s generally safer—but still not totally risk-free. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to play it safe.
💦 Bring your own water and a travel bowl!
Hydration is key, and giving your pup clean, fresh water throughout your hike helps keep them cool and healthy—while preventing them from slurping from sketchy puddles or ponds.
📦 Bonus tip: Pack a couple of old towels in your hiking bag or car!
They’re perfect for:
🧼 Wiping off muddy paws
🧽 Rinsing off debris or anything gross they may roll in
🧴 Drying them off if they do go in water (because no one wants a wet dog in the car!)
At J-B Pet Supplies, we carry quick-dry dog towels and pet-safe wipes that are trail-trip lifesavers.
Even if your dog is super well-behaved off-leash, always check the park or trail rules before you unclip. Many hiking areas require dogs to be leashed for their safety and the safety of others.
And when it comes to leashes...
🚫 Skip the retractable leash.
They may seem convenient, but retractable leashes can be dangerous on trails. They:
❌ Offer poor control in tight situations
❌ Can get tangled in brush or other hikers
❌ May encourage your dog to run out of sight
✅ Use a standard 4-6 foot leash or a hands-free hiking lead instead. These give you better control and help prevent unexpected run-ins with wildlife, bikers, or fellow hikers and their dogs.
✔️ Pack plenty of clean water
✔️ Keep your dog on a sturdy, non-retractable leash
✔️ Avoid still or sketchy water sources
✔️ Bring towels to clean and dry your pup
✔️ Watch for signs of overheating or fatigue
✔️ And always bring poop bags—leave no trace! 💩🌎
